Grand final Magpies vs Sharks

Grand final match up this Sunday, Magpies vs Sharks at Avondale!

The end of another Rugby League season is upon us. It has been a hard fought season for local Northern Districts competition teams, and this weekend players pull on their boots for the grand final on Sunday at Avondale.

The 1st game is between Gin Gin and Avondale with kickoff at 1pm, followed by the main game at 3pm when the Miriam Vale Magpies to take on Kolan Sharks.

The 2015 Magpies season has been one of mixed emotions and ups and downs. This will be the last season that veteran forward Glenn (Gonzo) Cox will play football in the NDRL.

After a lengthy career for the Magpies, the Gonz has decided it’s time to hang up the footy boots. Gonzo has been one of the stand out players in the Magpies outfit since he started in 2003.

He has been fortunate enough to have played in four successful grand final teams, and has played in one runner up side.

The last time the Magpies met the Sharks in a grand final, Gonzo was watching from the side lines in a wheel chair, with a broken leg.

The Sharks defeated the Magpies on that occasion.

The team will get a boost and drive knowing that Gonzo will not be wearing the black and white again on the field for this grand final match up.

Another part of the hard journey to the finals has been the loss of the brilliant Spencer Mariner. Spencer had a terrible injury at the beginning of the season while playing at Gary Larson Oval. He unfortunately broke his leg, and was out for the season.

The boys have rallied hard, and with the help of Spencer’s son Jessy, and his brother VJ, the boys have made it their mission to get to the finals. And if the football gods are kind enough, the Magpies can send two great players into retirements with one last grand final under thier belts.

After the Grand Final, the Magpies player presentation will be held back at the Magpies clubhouse, the bar and canteen will be operating. So please come down and have a beer with the boys and help the team celebrate the 2015 season.

The Magpies committee and players would like to thank all the sponsors and supporters for their continued support throughout the season.
