Southern Great Barrier Reef Destination

Tourism and Events Queensland (TEQ) together with Capricorn Enterprise (CE), Gladstone Area Promotion & Development Ltd (GAPDL) and Bundaberg North Burnett Tourism (BNBT) successfully held the Southern Great Barrier Reef’s inaugural Destination Leaders Program.

The aim of the Destination Leaders Program was to bring together key industry members in an informative and educational setting to build relationships within the region, improve Southern Great Barrier Reef product knowledge, encourage discussion, share knowledge and to build on existing momentum of the Southern Great Barrier Reef brand.

Duane Knapp, a global leader in brand stategy joined the Southern Great Barrier Reef Destination Leaders Program to share his insights and facilitate destination promise discussions.

Duane is founder and chairman of BrandStrategy Inc which has advised over 300 brands in 15 countries worldwide including destinations, corporations, communities, societies and countries who desire to optimise their perception, image and success.

Duane was a keynote speaker at the 2014 Destination Q conference and met with Amber Rodgers during this event.

Amber identified Duane’s immense experience working with destinations and began emailing him to gain some insights for Agnes Water and the Town of 1770.

To then have Duane actually visit our area in person last week and see the experiences on offer was a real coup!

Duane highlighted that destinations and tourism operators need to focus on how we can create a strong competitive position that will distinguish us in a way that is meaningful to our guests.

This was a unique opportunity for Southern Great Barrier Reef to help move our destination from good to great, to one of a kind.

Neil Mergard of 1770 LARC! Tours and Simon Della Santa of Lagoons 1770 Resort & Spa joined over 30 other participants, travelling from Bundaberg to Yeppoon over three days for the Program.

Whilst in Agnes Water and the Town of 1770 the group experienced 1770 Liquid Adventures, SUPing, bushwalking at 1770, 1770 Getaway Café, 1770 LARC! Tours, Agnes Water Beach Club, The Tree and Lagoons 1770 Resort & Spa, with a special appearance by Captain Cook to regale the history of our area!

Participants were provided with local mementos by Discovery Coast Tourism & Commerce Inc (DCTC), and they all quickly saw the DCTC Instaflags and used #VisitAgnes1770 when sharing images of their Southern Great Barrier Reef Destination Leaders Program journey.
